What does a bed bug look like?

An adult is usually 5–7 mm long, about the size of an apple seed. Its body is oval, brown and flat before feeding. After a meal, it becomes fuller and more reddish. Young bed bugs are smaller and paler, making them harder to spot.

Marks on bedding

Look for dark dots, rusty stains, shed skins and tiny pale eggs. A single stain is not enough to identify a bed bug.

Where do bed bugs hide during the day?

Bed bugs hide in seams, folds and small gaps, often near a bed or sofa. Check the mattress, bed base and headboard, then nearby furniture. Skirting boards, curtains and cracks can also provide hiding places: signs are not limited to bedding.

  • Mattress and bed-base seams.
  • Bed-frame and headboard joints.
  • Sofa folds and drawer joints.
